Description

Bearing the DDO-001 designation — the primary doubled die obverse for the date — the 1990-S Proof Kennedy Half Dollar DDO-001 exhibits medium hub doubling spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the S mintmark, the date, and the Y of LIBERTY on Gilroy Roberts's obverse portrait of President John F. Kennedy. The medium spread across multiple widely spaced design elements indicates a substantial hub displacement that affected a broad swath of the die face. The inclusion of the S mintmark among the doubled elements is diagnostically significant: since the mintmark was added to the die separately from the hub in earlier eras, its doubling here confirms the mint had transitioned to including the mintmark on the master die by 1990. Die markers UVC-225 and DMR-002 identify this working die across three documented stages: Stage A where both obverse and reverse are in early die state, and Stages B and C in mid and late die state respectively (both unconfirmed). As a proof issue struck at the San Francisco Mint, this coin was produced on specially polished planchets with polished dies yielding mirror fields and frosted devices. Attributed by VarietyVista, struck in the copper-nickel clad composition at 11.34 grams. Examine IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the S mintmark, and the tail of the Y in LIBERTY for the medium secondary contours.
