1990 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004
Error
Description
Among the strongest doubled die obverses cataloged for the 1990 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, WDDO-004 displays a pronounced counterclockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately the 2:00 position, affecting LIBERTY, IN, the date, the bowtie, and the front of the vest above and below the bowtie. This rotational doubling signature — where the secondary hub impression rotated relative to the primary around a fixed pivot — produces progressively wider spread on design elements positioned farther from the pivot axis, explaining why the date and LIBERTY show stronger effects than elements near the 2:00 pivot. Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-V, this variety benefits from dual cataloging in both the Wexler and CONECA attribution systems, providing collectors with independent verification of the variety's classification. The CONECA designation 1-O-V encodes the die class (1 for Class I hub doubling), the side (O for obverse), and a Roman numeral sequence within the class. Extensive die markers anchor the attribution: a die crack from the upper left cornice of the Memorial building to the rim through the I in UNITED, along with two heavy gouges to the left of the C in CENT. These reverse die markers confirm the specific die pairing and help distinguish this variety from the several other 1990 doubled die obverses that share superficially similar characteristics. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a copper-plated zinc planchet (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm diameter. Die Markers: Obverse: A die gouge extends from the rim just to the right of the second T inTRUST. Two diagonal die scratches can be found below the beard. Two heavy die gouges can be found to the left of the C in CENT.
