Description

Classified at Stage C in late die state (LDS), the 1989P-1DER-008WS trail die reverse shows moderate fluting under columns 2 and 3 along with moderate step deviation under columns 5 through 8 of the Lincoln Memorial. The moderate strength of both the fluting and step deviation places this variety in the middle range of the 1989-P WS census, with trail features that should be visible under standard magnification despite the late die state designation. A die chip on the left roof edge of the Memorial documents a localized loss of die steel where a small fragment broke away from the die surface, leaving a raised bump on struck coins — a progressive deterioration marker consistent with the LDS classification. A gouge in the stylobate under column 1 provides a precisely located marker at the base of the Memorial's first column, positioned in the horizontal platform that supports the columnar structure. The combination of a roof-edge die chip and a stylobate gouge places diagnostic markers at both the top and bottom of the Memorial's left side, creating a vertical attribution axis that spans the full height of the architectural design. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm. Die gouge in the stylobate under column 1.
