Documented by MadDieClashes and held in the collection of Joe Koelling, ADC-1c-1989-04 preserves a strong dual-event die clash on the 1989 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial Cent — meaning the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without an intervening planchet on two separate occasions. Atypical die clashes are distinguished from standard clashes by the unusual positioning or rotation of the dies when the malfunction occurs, producing transferred design elements in unexpected locations. On this specimen, the digits 89 from the date are visible clashed above the right side of the memorial building roof on the reverse, a dramatic displacement that reveals approximately how far the dies rotated relative to their normal alignment during the clash event. Die overlay analysis shows the approximate position of the dies when the clash occurred, mapping the transferred elements back to their source locations. One mark on the coin, indicated in reference photography with a green arrow, is specifically documented as not being part of the clash — a detail that prevents misidentification of unrelated die marks as clash artifacts. The 1989 Philadelphia Mint produced over 7 billion Lincoln Cents, yet atypical die clashes remain genuinely scarce because Mint personnel typically detected and removed affected dies before extensive production continued.
