1989 Doubled Working Hub Reverse WWHR-001
ErrorDescription
Representing hub-level doubling rather than die-level doubling, WWHR-001 (Wexler variety ID 1989 1¢ WWHR-001) identifies a doubled working hub whose misaligned impressions were transferred to every working die produced from that hub — meaning the doubling appears on coins struck from multiple different dies, each carrying its own unique set of die markers while sharing the same underlying hub doubling pattern. The spread manifests towards the rim on E PLURIBUS UNUM, increasing in strength from left to right across the motto, and also affects the right column dot and the first A in AMERICA. The increasing spread from left to right across E PLURIBUS UNUM indicates the hub displacement had a rotational component, with the pivot point located to the left of the motto so that elements farther right experienced greater angular displacement. Because die markers vary across the different working dies made from this hub, collectors will encounter specimens with identical hub doubling but different supplementary scratches, gouges, and die cracks — a characteristic that distinguishes working hub varieties from standard doubled dies, where all specimens share both the doubling and the die markers. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
