Description

First cataloged reverse pre-cud for the 1988-P Washington Quarter in the Cuds on Coins registry, this variety documents a die crack extending from the rim into the reverse design field that had not yet progressed to full fragment separation at the time the coin was struck. Pre-cuds preserve the intermediate stage of die failure — after initial cracking but before the fatigue fracture detaches a wedge of die steel to create a complete cud. The crack itself appears as a raised line on the finished coin, where metal flows into the incipient fracture during striking pressure. Philadelphia Mint, copper-nickel clad composition.
