The Roosevelt Dime series shifted to clad composition in 1965, and by 1987 mintmarks were applied by individual working dies rather than the hub — a practice that ended only in 1990 when mintmarks moved to the master die. That transition makes the 1987-D one of the final years in which RPM varieties could occur on this denomination through the traditional hand-punching method.
