1985 Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001
Error
Description
Originally cataloged as a repunched mintmark variety for the 1985-P Roosevelt Dime, WRPM-001 has been delisted following further examination and is no longer considered a genuine RPM. The variety was not felt to be a repunched mintmark at this time, and has been delisted as such. Delisting occurs when subsequent analysis by attribution specialists determines that the visual characteristics initially attributed to a repunched mintmark were more likely caused by die deterioration, machine doubling, strike artifacts, or grease-filled die anomalies that can mimic the appearance of a true RPM. Repunched mintmarks were common on coins produced before 1990 when mintmarks were individually hand-punched into working dies, allowing for positional errors. However, not every apparent doubling of the mintmark represents a genuine variety, and the rigorous standards applied by catalogers sometimes lead to reclassification. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1985-P 10c WRPM-001. This entry is retained in the catalog with its delisted status noted for reference, ensuring collectors who encounter the designation in older literature can understand its current standing.
