1985-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-028

Description

Also submitted by Brian Ribar and sharing the D/D North classification with WRPM-027, WRPM-028 on the 1985-D Lincoln Memorial cent presents overlapping but distinguishable obverse markers: gouges inside the lower opening and along the lower left edge of the 8, horizontal scratches from Lincoln's upper lip, die damage below IN, and a die dot in the ear's lower opening. While these primary markers closely resemble WRPM-027, the two originate from separate dies — careful comparison of secondary markers and the precise repunching geometry is required for correct attribution. The reverse carries a gouge right of the lower first A in AMERICA, three closely spaced gouges in upper bay 1, roughness around the O in ONE, gouges in the lower E of ONE, and a gouge on the N in CENT. The similarity between WRPM-027 and WRPM-028 underscores why comprehensive die marker documentation is indispensable: without secondary markers, two dies with identical repunching directions could be conflated into a single catalog entry. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams and 19mm from the 1985 mintage exceeding 5.65 billion cents (Wexler ID: 1985-D 1¢ WRPM-028). D/D North Die Markers: Obverse: Die gouges show inside the lower opening and along the lower left edge of the 8 in the date. Light horizontal scratches run east from Lincoln’s upper lip. A small die gouge (dot) shows in the lower opening of the ear. Reverse: A die gouge shows to the right of the lower first A in AMERICA. A series of three closely spaced die gouges show in upper Memorial bay 1. A series of die gouges show in lower opening of the E in ONE. A die gouge shows on the right edge of the N in CENT.
