1985-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-027

Description

Submitted by Brian Ribar, WRPM-027 on the 1985-D Lincoln Memorial cent shows a D/D North displacement with a multi-stage die marker inventory. Primary obverse diagnostics include die gouges inside the lower opening and along the lower left edge of the 8, horizontal scratches from Lincoln's upper lip, die damage below IN, and a gouge dot in the ear's lower opening. Later-stage obverse markers add a die scratch east from the top of the B in LIBERTY, a die dot above B's right side, a horizontal gouge above I in LIBERTY, and a faded scratch below the R in TRUST. The reverse features a gouge right of the lower first A in AMERICA, three closely spaced gouges in upper bay 1, roughness around the O in ONE, gouges in the lower E of ONE, a gouge on the N in CENT, a die dot left of column 1's base, a gouge left of the lower R in AMERICA, and a dot below the last A in AMERICA. This marker set spanning two die stages makes WRPM-027 one of the most thoroughly documented RPMs for the date. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from Denver's 1985 production of approximately 5.65 billion cents (Wexler ID: 1985-D 1¢ WRPM-027).
