1985-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-025

Description

Defined by pervasive die scratching across both sides, WRPM-025 on the 1985-D Lincoln Memorial cent carries scratches running north-northeast to south-southwest throughout most obverse fields and west-northwest across most of the reverse — coverage suggesting extensive die maintenance during the die's service life. A die gouge well south of the right side of the T in LIBERTY anchors the obverse attribution. The reverse accumulates multiple die gouges around STA in STATES, another right of the S in PLURIBUS, one right of the lower C in AMERICA, and several on the roof above columns 7 and 8. The directional consistency of scratches — uniformly oriented on each side but at different angles between obverse and reverse — indicates deliberate maintenance rather than accidental damage, as each die face was polished independently. No CONECA or Coppercoins cross-references have been established. The extensive scratching ironically makes this variety easier to attribute than many cleaner dies. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from Denver's 1985 output of approximately 5.65 billion cents (Wexler ID: 1985-D 1¢ WRPM-025).
