1985-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-023

Description

Among the most remarkable RPMs cataloged for the 1985-D Lincoln Memorial cent, WRPM-023 is a triple repunch — D/D/D South and Tilted — meaning the mint mark received three separate impressions before the die entered production. Triple RPMs are considerably scarcer than standard double repunches, as they document an additional correction event during the mint mark application process. The mint mark sits notably close to the 9 in the date, a positional diagnostic. Obverse markers include two small die gouges above the left side of the 8, a gouge on top of the bow tie, and another on the shoulder east-southeast of the Y in LIBERTY. The reverse reveals die cracks and chips on columns 2, 4, and 7 alongside a die gouge on the roof above column 8, a small gouge along the right side of the first U in UNUM, and heavy die polishing on the right side above FG at the rim. The column damage across three widely separated columns suggests a die under considerable stress. No cross-references to CONECA or Coppercoins have been established. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from Denver's 1985 production of approximately 5.65 billion cents (Wexler ID: 1985-D 1¢ WRPM-023).
