1985-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-008

Description

One of the earliest-attributed RPMs for this date, WRPM-008 displays a D/D South displacement and is cross-referenced by CONECA as RPM #2 and Coppercoins under two designations — 1985D-1MM-002 and 1985D-1MM-016 — WRPM-008 on the 1985-D cent is one of the earliest-attributed RPMs for this date. The dual Coppercoins numbers indicate that what were originally cataloged as two separate dies were later recognized as the same variety in different die states. Stage A obverse markers include a die gouge behind the bust truncation, fine scratches between the N of IN and G in GOD, and light scratches above the date. By Stage B, many obverse features have faded while new gouges appear under the 8 in the date and above LI in LIBERTY. The Stage A reverse shows curved die scratches above Lincoln's statue in Memorial bay 6 and east-west scratches through ONE and CENT. Stage B weakens these markers while adding a gouge under the A in STATES. The southward displacement requires examination below the primary mint mark for traces of the earlier impression. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from a 1985 mintage exceeding 5.65 billion cents (Wexler ID: 1985-D 1¢ WRPM-008).
