1985-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-007

Description

Showing a D/D East displacement, RPM-007 on the 1985-D Lincoln Memorial cent places its secondary mint mark impression to the east of the primary punch — the mirror opposite of RPM-006's westward shift. This directional pairing illustrates how the mint mark application process could err in any compass direction. VarietyVista assigns UVC-997 and die marker record DMR-008 to this variety. All three documented die states carry unconfirmed designations for Stages A and C, with Stage B recording both obverse and reverse at mid-die state. The eastward secondary impression means collectors should examine the right side of the D mint mark for traces of an earlier punch that was subsequently corrected. Identifying the direction of repunching requires careful examination under magnification, comparing the primary and secondary impressions to determine which was applied first — the secondary (earlier) punch typically appears as a partial or ghostly outline partially obscured by the final, full-strength impression. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets weighing 2.5 grams at 19mm from Denver's prolific 1985 production of approximately 5.65 billion Lincoln cents.
