Description

Distinctive for its reverse die scratches, RPM-004 on the 1985-D Lincoln Memorial cent combines the standard repunched mint mark diagnostic with notable east-west oriented die scratches across the upper reverse that appear at mid-die state. VarietyVista assigns this variety UVC-994 and die marker record DMR-005. The Stage A obverse is in early die state, providing the sharpest view of the secondary mint mark impression, while the reverse simultaneously shows the east-west scratches that serve as a secondary attribution marker. Stages B and C are recorded but unconfirmed, indicating the census for later die states remains thin. The reverse die scratches are particularly useful for authentication because they are independent of the mint mark area — a collector can verify both the repunched mint mark and the distant die scratches as belonging to the same die, creating a two-point confirmation system. Die scratches of this type typically result from abrasive maintenance performed on the die face during production. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams and 19mm from a 1985 mintage of over 5.65 billion cents.
