Description

The 1984 (S) Olympic Dollar is a commemorative dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint. The U.S. Mint produced 116,675 examples. The second silver dollar in the 1984 Olympics commemorative program, this coin features the iconic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The obverse features the gateway to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum with two headless torso statues flanking an Olympic flame, while the reverse displays a perched American eagle atop an olive branch. Designed by Robert Graham. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9611. This coin is the companion piece to the 1983 Olympiad Dollar. The program's commercial success helped establish the modern era of commemorative coinage and proved that commemoratives could be significant fundraising tools.
