1984 Atypical Die Clash ADC-10C-1984-02

Description

Ranked alongside ADC-10-1994-01 as one of the two strongest identified Roosevelt Dime clashed die examples as of summer 2011, this 1984 Philadelphia Mint atypical die clash is remarkable for being visible to the naked eye. The obverse displays transferred reverse elements including EP from E PLURIBUS UNUM, ON from ONE, olive branches and olive, parts of the torch, and portions of the oak leaves. The reverse reciprocally shows OD and RUST from IN GOD WE TRUST, 19 from the date, and most of the portrait outline — an extraordinary amount of transferred detail from a single clash event. The sheer breadth of design transfer on both sides indicates the dies met with substantial force while no planchet was between them, and the atypical classification suggests the contact occurred at an unusual angle or position relative to normal die alignment. That this clash is obvious without magnification places it among a small minority of die clashes strong enough for immediate recognition, making ADC-10C-1984-02 a prized example of the category for Roosevelt Dime variety collectors.
