1984 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler team, WDDO-001 documents a very strong spread to the north on Lincoln's ear and beard on the 1984 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent. The northward displacement of the secondary hub impression is pronounced enough to produce unmistakable doubling in the ear region — a diagnostic area that gained fame from the 1984 date's association with highly collectible ear-doubled varieties. The beard doubling adds a secondary layer of confirmation, as the fine engraved lines of the beard magnify even modest misalignment into visible doubled contours. Obverse die markers include two parallel die scratches running northwest to southeast through the E of WE, and two parallel die scratches extending northeast from the front of the vest to the left of the lower 1 in the date. Reverse die markers include numerous west-to-east die scratches below the Memorial and a die scratch running south-southeast from the top of the right T in CENT. These die scratches provide secondary diagnostics for confirming the specific die pair independently of the doubling itself. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from a mintage exceeding 8.15 billion pieces.
