Description

Discovered by Andrew Heebner of Pennsylvania and cataloged as 1984P-1DEO-004T in the Trail Dies reference, this variety captures a Stage B trail die impression on the 1984 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent. Stage B indicates a mid-die-state condition, meaning the dies show moderate wear but had not yet reached the advanced deterioration of later stages — placing the trail die contact earlier in the production timeline relative to the Stage C varieties. The obverse diagnostic is a die dot on the right side of the 9 in the date, a small raised feature transferred from a stacked die surface that appears as a tiny bump adjacent to the numeral. On the reverse, two separate markers confirm the die pair: a die dent to the left of the first S in STATES and die damage to the right of column 12 of the Lincoln Memorial. The column reference follows the standard numbering convention for Memorial cent reverse architecture, where the twelve columns are counted left to right, placing column 12 at the far right of the building. These precisely located markers enable confident attribution even on circulated specimens where surface detail may be reduced. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from a mintage exceeding 8.15 billion cents.
