1984 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008
Error
Description
Targeting three closely grouped facial features, Wexler's 1984 1-cent WDDO-008 displays strong spread to the northeast on the lower ear, the beard, and Lincoln's eye on the Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent — three closely grouped facial features that form a compelling diagnostic cluster. Northeast spread on the ear echoes the famous "doubled ear" theme that defines the most celebrated 1984 doubled die, though WDDO-008 represents a distinct die with its own spread direction. The involvement of Lincoln's eye adds an unusual dimension, as eye doubling is less commonly cataloged among Lincoln cent doubled dies than ear or beard doubling. Obverse die markers include numerous scratches running west-southwest to east-northeast throughout the obverse field. On the reverse, a very strong north-to-south gouge in the tenth Memorial bay serves as a prominent secondary diagnostic. No cross references to other attribution systems have been established. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from a production run exceeding 8.15 billion cents.
