1984 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004
ErrorDescription
Standing out for the intensity of its doubling on a single word, Wexler's 1984 1-cent WDDO-004 displays extreme extra thickness on LIBERTY on the 1984 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent. The "extreme" classification places this variety at the highest end of the doubling-strength scale, indicating that the secondary hub impression thickened the LIBERTY letters to a degree immediately apparent under moderate magnification. When extra thickness is concentrated on LIBERTY while other obverse elements remain comparatively unaffected, it suggests the hub misalignment was oriented along an axis that maximized displacement across the LIBERTY legend's position on the die while minimizing it elsewhere. On the reverse, a small gouge appears to the left of the top of the second A in AMERICA, and numerous scratches are distributed throughout the reverse field. These reverse die markers offer secondary confirmation of the die pair. No cross references to other attribution systems have been established for WDDO-004, making the Wexler designation the primary catalog entry. Philadelphia produced approximately 8.15 billion cents in 1984 on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams.
