Description

Bearing the Wexler designation 1984 1-cent WDDO-003, this Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent shows extra thickness and spread towards center on the date, the right side of the bottom bust, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST. The inward-directed spread across four distinct obverse zones points to a systematic angular misalignment during hubbing rather than a localized anomaly, with the doubling strongest where design elements sit farthest from the effective pivot point. No significant obverse die markers have been cataloged, meaning the doubling pattern itself serves as the primary diagnostic. On the reverse, a vertical die scratch appears to the right of the right cornice, accompanied by numerous north-to-south scratches throughout the reverse field. These reverse markers help confirm the specific die pair, since doubled die designations describe only the obverse die while the reverse may have been swapped during production. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from a date with over 8.15 billion cents produced.
