1984 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Attributed by the Wexler team as 1984 1-cent WDDO-002, this Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent exhibits strong extra thickness and spread towards center on LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. The variety shows progressive die states: Obverse Stage A displays a short gouge northeast of the top of the beard; Stage B adds die clash marks left of Lincoln's neck, X-shaped scratches below ER in LIBERTY, and numerous scratches left and right of the bust. On the reverse, Stage A shows a strong diagonal scratch through the E of ONE and a diagonal scratch between ON of ONE and the Memorial; Stage B adds die clash marks in the third bay, above the right Memorial, below the left Memorial, and three curving scratches southeast from the upper right T in UNITED. The multi-stage progression allows collectors to determine where their specimen falls in the production sequence, with Stage A representing earlier strikes before additional clash marks accumulated. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from Philadelphia's 1984 production of over 8.15 billion cents. Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: A short die gouge can be found NE of the top of the beard. Die scratches form an X below the ER in LIBERTY. Numerous die scratches can be found to the left of and to the right of the bust. Reverse Stage A: A strong diagonal die scratch runs through the E of ONE. A long diagonal die scratch can be found between the ON of ONE and the Memorial. Three curving die scratches run SE from the upper right of the T in UNITED.
