About This Coin

The 1984 Los Angeles Olympiad Commemorative Ten Dollar Gold is a United States commemorative dollar. This $10 gold piece was the first U.S. gold coin struck since the suspension of gold coinage in 1933. It was struck at the West Point Mint, which received official Mint status partly due to the production of this coin. Surcharges supported the U.S. Olympic Committee. The obverse features a male and female runner jointly holding an Olympic torch aflame, while the reverse displays a soaring eagle carrying an olive branch and arrows, with thirteen stars above. Designed by John M. Mercanti, James Peed. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 16.72 grams, 26.92 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Beyond its Olympic significance, this coin holds the historic distinction of being the first U.S. gold coin produced in over 50 years. It paved the way for subsequent commemorative gold issues and the American Gold Eagle bullion program launched in 1986.
