Description
The 1984 (D) Proof Los Angeles Olympiad Commemorative Ten Dollar Gold is a proof commemorative dollar struck at the Denver Mint. With a mintage of 34,533, this is a scarce commemorative issue. This $10 gold piece was the first U.S. The obverse features a male and female runner jointly holding an Olympic torch aflame, while the reverse displays a soaring eagle carrying an olive branch and arrows, with thirteen stars above. Designed by John M. Mercanti, James Peed. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 16.72 grams, 26.92 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9615. Beyond its Olympic significance, this coin holds the historic distinction of being the first U.S. gold coin produced in over 50 years. It paved the way for subsequent commemorative gold issues and the American Gold Eagle bullion program launched in 1986.
