1984-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-008

Description

Presenting D/D South repunching with extensive die markers on both sides, WRPM-008 is among the most diagnostically detailed entries in the 1984 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial cent repunched mint mark catalog. Cataloged as Wexler 1984-D 1¢ WRPM-008, the southward displacement places the remnant below the final D. Obverse diagnostics include a gouge south of I in IN, a gouge north of B in LIBERTY, a large gouge behind Lincoln's neck, and gouges on the 9 and inside the 4 of the date. On the reverse, markers include a gouge above the left cornice level with the first S in STATES, gouges below and right of the second A in AMERICA, a gouge touching the upper right N in ONE, a gouge inside the lower curve of O in ONE, and die cracks on the upper portions of columns 1 and 2. The reverse die cracks provide reliable stage indicators, as they typically lengthen and widen as the die ages, letting collectors approximate where a specimen falls in the die's production life. Denver struck approximately 5.57 billion 1984 cents on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams. Die gouges below and right of the upper second A in AMERICA. Die gouge touching upper right side of N in ONE. Die gouge on the inside lower curve of the O in ONE.
