1984-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-005

Description

The fifth repunched mint mark attributed by the Wexler team for the 1984 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial cent, WRPM-005 extends the census of dies on which the D mint mark punch was applied with a positional offset. Cataloged as Wexler 1984-D 1¢ WRPM-005, this variety represents another unique die distinguished by the direction and magnitude of its repunching and by individual die markers that developed during use. The 1984 Denver cent, produced at a scale of approximately 5.57 billion pieces on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams, required thousands of working dies. Each received its mint mark through individual hand-punching — a Mint employee positioned a steel letter punch bearing the D over the die face and struck it with a hammer. Even slight movement between hammer blows, or intentional repositioning to correct an off-center first impression, produced the secondary images that define repunched mint marks. WRPM-005 documents one such instance from among the thousands of dies prepared for 1984-D cent production.
