Description

The sole documented rim cud for the 1984 Denver Jefferson Nickel, CU-5c-1984D-01 stands in contrast to the prolific cud production recorded at Philadelphia during the same era. While the 1983-P date yielded over a dozen cataloged cuds, Denver's 1984 nickel dies produced only this single confirmed rim failure. The disparity may reflect differences in die steel batches, press maintenance schedules, or die replacement thresholds between the two facilities. Denver received its working dies from the Philadelphia die shop already bearing the D mintmark, and local press operators determined when deteriorating dies warranted removal. A cud on a Denver nickel carries the same mechanical origin as its Philadelphia counterparts: progressive cracking at a rim stress point culminating in fragment separation, leaving a void that strikes as a raised plateau. Felix Schlag's Jefferson portrait faces left on the obverse, while Monticello's south elevation occupies the reverse. As the first and only cataloged cud for 1984-D, this variety holds singular status within its date-and-mint combination.
