1984-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under internal tracking code UVC-456 and die marriage reference DMR-002, this 1984-D Jefferson Nickel displays a D/D North repunched mintmark and holds the primary catalog position as RPM-001 for the date-mint combination. The northward displacement means the initial D punch was positioned slightly below the final corrected location, leaving evidence of the first impression visible south of the primary mintmark. Die stage documentation records three states: Stage A where both obverse and reverse are at early die state, Stage B at mid-die-state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The confirmed EDS for both dies in Stage A means the earliest known specimens preserve the crispest possible rendering of the repunched mintmark before die wear begins to soften the overlapping letter impressions. The Jefferson Nickel was designed by Felix Schlag and struck at the Denver Mint in 1984, composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. By 1984, the practice of hand-punching mintmarks into individual working dies was nearing its final decade — the U.S. Mint would begin incorporating mintmarks into master dies starting around 1990 for most denominations, effectively ending the creation of new repunched mintmark varieties. The 1984-D RPM-001 therefore documents one of the later instances of hand-punched mintmark misalignment in the Jefferson Nickel series, occurring during a period when the Denver Mint's production methods remained essentially unchanged from the manual techniques employed since the series began in 1938.
