Cuds are among the most dramatic mint errors because the missing die fragment creates an unmistakable blob of raised metal that interrupts the normal rim and adjacent design elements — the planchet metal flows into the void left by the broken die piece, producing a smooth, rounded protrusion. The Stage A designation indicates this is an early die state of the cud, meaning the break was relatively recent when this coin was struck and the cud area may appear more sharply defined than later-stage examples where continued die use further deteriorated the break zone.
