CU-25c-1983P-01B Cud

Description

Documented by Cuds on Coins, this 1983 Philadelphia Washington quarter exhibits a cud error at the 1 o'clock position on the obverse. A cud forms when a piece of the hardened steel die breaks away at the rim, leaving an unstruck area on the resulting coin that appears as a raised, featureless blob of metal where design detail should be. The 01B position code indicates the break occurred near the upper right of Washington's portrait. The 1983-P quarter was struck in the copper-nickel clad composition that replaced the earlier silver alloy in 1965. Cuds on the Washington quarter series are collected by position, with obverse cuds near the portrait or legend drawing particular interest. Because the broken die segment is missing entirely, planchets struck by the damaged die receive no impression in the affected zone, creating the characteristic smooth raised area that defines a true cud as opposed to a retained cud or simple die crack.
