Description

Second documented reverse cud for the 1983 Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Dime, CU-10c-1983P-02R records a die failure where a section of the reverse die rim fractured and broke away during production. The resulting cavity filled with metal during each subsequent strike, leaving a raised featureless area at the rim of the finished coin. Cuds are among the most visually dramatic die errors because the blank, raised mass stands in stark contrast to the surrounding design elements. The Roosevelt Dime, designed by John R. Sinnock and first struck in 1946, was produced at Philadelphia in copper-nickel clad composition throughout the 1980s in quantities sufficient to supply everyday commerce. The mechanical stresses of high-volume production — where dies struck thousands of coins per hour — inevitably caused rim fractures on some die pairs. The CU-10c prefix in the catalog code identifies this as a dime cud, with the sequence number -02R indicating it is the second reverse cud documented for 1983-P. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, this variety belongs to the broader catalog of Roosevelt Dime die errors spanning eight decades of continuous production.
