Description

Also contributed by Steve Young, CCLTI-1C-1983-05 rounds out the Type I counter clash census for the 1983 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent with counterclash evidence on both obverse and reverse. The obverse displays a second partial outline of the back of Lincoln's head — a ghostly duplicate contour displaced from the normal profile, originating when the reverse die's incuse impression was transferred back to the obverse during a second clash at a different angle. On the reverse, two diagnostic features appear: a partial extra column in the third bay of the Memorial and a partial extra roofline below and east of the M in UNUM. The extra roofline fragment is notable because the Memorial's roof is one of the most prominent linear features on the reverse, and even a partial displaced impression creates a visually distinctive anomaly. The consistency of counterclash features between CCLTI-1C-1983-04 and this variety — both showing partial columns in the third bay — suggests die pairs that experienced similar clash geometries, though each originates from a distinct die confirmed by differences in the specific positions and extents of the counterclashed elements. The five-entry Type I counter clash census for 1983 reflects the intensive die examination this date receives. Attribution by MadDieClashes.
