1983 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013

Description

Closing the Wexler doubled die obverse census for 1983 at thirteen entries, WDDO-013 presents an exceptionally well-documented variety with spread visible on LIBERTY, the date, and IN GOD WE TRUST on the Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent. Cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1983P-1DO-004 and Wexler WDDO-013, this die carries one of the most extensive diagnostic marker inventories in the entire 1983 series. The obverse exhibits a die gouge southeast of the first T in TRUST, a die scratch running southeast-northwest between the forehead and US in TRUST, heavy die gouges on the lapel to the left of the date, a die scratch running southwest-northeast between the lapel and rim, light north-northeast to south-southwest die scratches through LIBERTY, a minute die gouge dot touching the top of the I in LIBERTY, and a long die crack or break extending along the outside rim from 11 o'clock to 3 o'clock. This rim crack spanning nearly a third of the die's circumference represents severe structural failure that would have ended the die's service life shortly after developing. The reverse shows light horizontal die scratches under the lower right Memorial base through CENT, a die scratch running northwest from above the lower left O in ONE, and light southwest-northeast die scratches in the upper corners of bays one and two.
