1983 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-011

Description

Among the most extensively cross-referenced varieties in the 1983 WDDO census, WDDO-011 is documented across four independent attribution systems: CONECA 8-O-V-CW, Coppercoins 1983P-1DO-003, Crawford CDDO-010, and Wexler WDDO-011. This variety features a clockwise spread pivoting from approximately 4 o'clock, producing doubling on LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST on the 1983 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent. The obverse exhibits numerous die scratches running southwest-northeast on both sides of the bust, along with a die chip that fills the lower portion of the 8 in the date — a distinctive marker that makes this variety relatively straightforward to identify among the extensive population of 1983 doubled die obverses. Die chips occur when a small fragment of the die steel breaks away from the working surface, leaving a void that fills with metal during striking to produce a raised blob on the finished coin. The filled lower 8 represents one of the most visually obvious die markers in the entire 1983 WDDO sequence. The reverse carries numerous die scratches oriented south-southwest to north-northeast between the bottom of the Memorial and CENT.
