1983 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-010
Error
Description
Rotating in the opposite direction from most 1983 WDDOs, WDDO-010 displays a counterclockwise spread pivoting from approximately 12 o'clock, producing doubling on LIBERTY and the date of the 1983 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent. Designated Wexler WDDO-010, the pivot point at the top of the die means the greatest displacement appears at the bottom of the design — explaining why LIBERTY and the date exhibit the most visible doubling while elements near 12 o'clock show minimal separation. The obverse carries a precise set of die markers: a die scratch running northwest-southeast below 83 in the date, remnants of a die clash on the neck just above the collar, a die scratch extending southeast from the front of the throat, and a die scratch running northwest from the top right of Y in LIBERTY. These distributed markers provide multiple attribution checkpoints across different obverse regions. The reverse shows heavy die abrading along with die scratches above the right cornice, a die scratch running east-northeast from the center of E in ONE, and die scratches oriented north-northwest from the top of T in CENT. The heavy reverse abrading indicates extensive Mint maintenance, likely to remove clash marks or smooth deteriorating surfaces before returning the die to production. Attribution by Wexler Team. Reverse: The reverse die has been heavily abraded.
