1983 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008

Description

Mirroring the dual-direction spread character of WDDO-007 but with a different geometric signature, WDDO-008 shows LIBERTY spreading toward the rim while the date and IN GOD WE TRUST spread toward the center on the 1983 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent. Designated Wexler WDDO-008 with no other known cross-references, this variety shares the unusual opposing-direction doubling mechanism but originates from a different die, confirmed by its unique die markers. The obverse exhibits remnants of a die clash to the left of the back of Lincoln's neck — evidence that the dies struck each other without a planchet — along with numerous east-west die scratches on both sides of the bust. These clash remnants indicate the die was returned to service after the clash event, with clash marks only partially removed by abrading. The reverse carries a die gouge below the right Memorial base and numerous die scratches oriented west-northwest to east-southeast below the Memorial. The presence of clash remnants alongside the hub doubling creates a diagnostically rich die surface offering multiple independent confirmation points for attribution. Dual-direction spread varieties like WDDO-007 and WDDO-008 arise from hubbing misalignments involving both angular rotation and linear displacement. Attribution by Wexler Team.
