Description

The fourth Wexler-designated doubled die obverse for 1983, WDDO-004 shows a Class V clockwise spread pivoting from approximately 4 o'clock, with doubling on LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. Cross-referenced as Crawford CDDO-010 and Wexler WDDO-004, this variety is documented across two distinct die states providing a chronological record of the die's service life. At Stage A, the obverse carries a short die gouge running west from the hair below GO of GOD and short diagonal die scratches at the top center of the neck, while the reverse shows short diagonal die scratches at the top of the 8th and bottom of the 9th bays of the Memorial facade. At Stage B, the obverse has developed a die scratch curving northwest from the upper E of LIBERTY and a die chip in the lower 8 of the date, while the reverse shows a short strong die scratch south-southwest from the bottom of the second T in STATES and a short strong die scratch southeast from the bottom of the right cornice. The progression from Stage A to Stage B documents accumulating die damage — the die chip in the 8 and new die scratches near LIBERTY mark measurable deterioration that allows collectors to determine whether a specimen was produced earlier or later in the die's life. The Crawford CDDO-010 cross-reference connects this variety to Crawford's comprehensive doubled die catalog. Attribution by Wexler Team.
