Description

The most extensively documented doubled die obverse for the 1983 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, WDDO-001 exhibits a Class V clockwise spread pivoting from approximately 5 o'clock, producing doubling on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and slightly on the date. Cross-referenced across multiple attribution systems — Cherrypickers FS-01-1983-101 (035), Breen #2309, Crawford CDDO-001, CONECA 1-O-V, and Wexler WDDO-001 — this variety is the same die as DDO-001 but documented here under the Wexler Team's more detailed attribution framework, which includes class designation, spread direction, and multi-stage die state analysis. At Stage A, no significant obverse or reverse die markers are noted. At Stage B, the obverse develops heavy die scratches running southeast from the front of the bust, especially visible under the nose, while the reverse shows heavy die scratches running through and under the Memorial and through ONE CENT. These progressive die markers allow collectors to determine not only whether a specimen is from this die but also its approximate position in the die's production sequence. The Stage B die scratches represent substantial die deterioration that would have developed after thousands of strikes, and specimens showing these markers were produced later in the die's service life than clean Stage A examples.
