CU-5c-1983P-20 Rim Cud

Description

The twentieth documented cud for the 1983-P Jefferson Nickel, cataloged by Cuds on Coins with JNC file numbers from the Thurman and Margolis Cud Book. Rim cuds form when a section of the die rim fractures and separates during production, creating a raised featureless area at the coin's edge where the void fills with metal under striking pressure. No cross-references to other catalogs are currently known. Twenty cuds for a single date-mint is a remarkable concentration suggesting either elevated die failure rates at Philadelphia in 1983 or exceptionally thorough searching by cud specialists. At 75% copper and 25% nickel, 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1983-P still carried Schlag's original design. Cuds are among the most dramatic errors, visible without magnification due to the unmistakable raised blank area.
