Bearing cross-reference JNC-83P-6, this CU-5c-1983P-08 cud on a 1983 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel represents one of a notably large cluster of rim cuds documented for the 1983-P date. The JNC registry has cataloged multiple die failures across the 1983 Philadelphia production run, making it one of the more productive dates for cud hunters in the series. Philadelphia's coining presses in 1983 operated at high speed, and the mechanical stresses of sustained production accelerated die fatigue at rim contact points. When die steel fractures at the rim, the separated fragment either falls away entirely or remains partially attached as a retained cud; in either case, struck coins carry diagnostic evidence of the break.
