Description

Residing in the collection of noted error dealer Fred Weinberg, this 1983 Jefferson Nickel typical die clash shows the transfer of design elements between dies that occurs when they strike together without a planchet between them. On the obverse, the M and last O of Monticello from the reverse die are visible as clash marks, ghost impressions left when the coining press drove the unshielded dies into direct contact. The reverse correspondingly shows an outline of Jefferson's head clashed from the obverse die. This coin also exhibits a cud designated CU-5c-1983-02, a retained die break at the rim that adds a second variety type. Die clashes were relatively common in high-speed production where planchet feeding mechanisms occasionally misfired, but the clarity of transferred images varies considerably. The 1983 Jefferson Nickel was struck in standard copper-nickel composition used since 1938, apart from the wartime silver alloy of 1942-1945. The combination of a typical die clash with a cataloged cud makes this specimen a compelling study piece for error and variety collectors.
