1983 Atypical Die Clash ADC-5C-1983-01

Description

Cataloged as ADC-5c-1983-01 by MadDieClashes, this 1983 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel preserves a strong clash event where the obverse and reverse dies made contact without a planchet between them. The specimen resides in the collection of Joe Koelling. On the obverse, a partial letter M from the word MONTICELLO transferred from the reverse die, along with the right top and bottom outlines of the Monticello building. A partial O from MONTICELLO and the left top and bottom of the building are also visible on the obverse. The space between Jefferson's neck and his queue shows the most prominent clash impression, accompanied by transferred elements of the bow and portions of Jefferson's hair. On the reverse, Jefferson's collar, chin, and forehead appear as incuse impressions transferred from the obverse die. Atypical die clashes differ from standard clashes in that the dies contact each other at an unusual angle or with abnormal displacement, producing transfer patterns in unexpected locations across the coin's surface.
