Description

Beyond the three Fivaz-Stanton-listed varieties, DDO-004 catalogs a fourth doubled die obverse on the 1983 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, displaying light extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST and the date. Identified by die markers UVC-2369 and DMR-005, this variety falls outside the Cherrypickers' Guide but remains a documented hub doubling attributable to a specific die within the master registry. The description of "extra thickness" rather than "spread" distinguishes this doubling's visual character from the separation-type doubling seen on DDO-001 through DDO-003 — instead of clearly separated secondary images, the letters and numerals appear abnormally bold or thickened, as though the design elements received additional material during a very close-tolerance misalignment between hub impressions. This close-set doubling can be more challenging to detect than wider spreads, as the secondary image overlaps almost entirely with the primary impression and manifests primarily as enlarged serifs or widened letter strokes. The involvement of both IN GOD WE TRUST and the date places the affected region in the upper and lower portions of the obverse, consistent with a slight vertical or diagonal shift between hubbing impressions.
