Description

Closing out this batch as the final Bronze Small Date entry, CU-1C-1982-39 brings the overall 1982 Philadelphia cud census documented across batches 70 and 71 to a combined total of forty entries spanning all four subtypes. The Bronze Small Date cud population, while smaller than the Bronze Large Date or Zinc Large Date tallies, is nonetheless significant given the subtype's relatively limited production window. Every Bronze Small Date cud is a survivor from a narrow slice of 1982 production — the period when Philadelphia was striking the pre-transition copper alloy using the less common small date punch — and each one carries the dual distinction of being both an error coin and a representative of a scarce variety. The 1982 composition transition from 95% copper (3.1 grams) to copper-plated zinc (2.5 grams) remains the defining event in modern Lincoln cent history, and the cuds documented across both compositions provide a mechanical failure record that spans the entire changeover.
