Description

Classified as a rim cud on the Bronze Small Date subtype, CU-1C-1982-30 records a peripheral die fracture where the break remained confined to the coin's outermost edge rather than extending into the interior design field. Rim cuds on the Bronze Small Date are particularly scarce finds because they require the convergence of three conditions: a die prepared with the small date punch must be striking bronze planchets (limiting the production window), the die must develop a rim-confined fracture (a specific failure geometry), and the resulting coins must survive in sufficient numbers for at least one to be discovered and submitted to the census. The narrow raised strip that a rim cud produces along the coin's border is less visually dramatic than a full interior cud, which may cause some specimens to be overlooked by casual searchers — making confirmed rim cuds on lower-production subtypes genuinely uncommon. At 95% copper and 3.1 grams, this Bronze Small Date cent predates the mid-1982 transition to copper-plated zinc.
