Description

Designated a rim cud in the Cuds on Coins census, CU-1C-1982-17 is the second rim-classified entry on the 1982 Philadelphia Zinc Large Date subtype, joining CU-1C-1982-12 in this narrower category. Rim cuds result from fractures that remain confined to the die's peripheral margin — the outermost ring of steel where the die face transitions to the collar interface. The resulting raised strip on struck coins is typically narrow and follows the coin's border without encroaching into the portrait or legend areas, making rim cuds generally less dramatic in appearance than full interior cuds but no less significant from a die-failure documentation standpoint. Philadelphia's four distinct 1982 cent subtypes — Bronze Large Date, Bronze Small Date, Zinc Large Date, and Zinc Small Date — all required their own inventories of working dies, and rim failures were documented across every configuration. The Zinc Large Date subtype, struck from 2.5-gram copper-plated zinc planchets after the mid-year transition from the traditional 95% copper alloy, likely accounted for a substantial portion of Philadelphia's second-half 1982 output.
