Description

Returning to the Small Date subtype after a sustained run of Large Date entries, CU-1c-1982-59(SD) on the Zinc Small Date at 2.5 grams documents an interior cud on one of the less frequently encountered 1982 Philadelphia configurations. The compact small date numerals — with their tightly spaced digits and characteristically shorter "9" — must be verified against large date reference photographs to prevent misattribution, since both zinc subtypes share identical weight and planchet composition and can only be distinguished by the date punch employed during die preparation. Small Date entries in the upper census numbers are relatively uncommon because the small date punch saw more limited deployment than its large date counterpart at the Philadelphia Mint in 1982, resulting in fewer dies struck with this configuration and correspondingly fewer die breaks available for documentation. On the zinc planchet, the copper coating over the zinc core fills the interior cud void with layered material whose surface presents the standard copper tone of a Lincoln cent while concealing the lighter-density zinc substrate beneath. The absence of independent cross-references for this census number means identification relies on the Cuds on Coins documentation and its reference photography. Attribution by Cuds on Coins.
