Description

Second in the 1982 Philadelphia cud census, CU-1C-1982-02 appears on the Zinc Small Date subtype — a different configuration from the Zinc Large Date that hosts entry 01. This early divergence across subtypes demonstrates that die rim failures occurred on dies prepared for both date punch styles, as would be expected given that each style required its own set of working dies. The Small Date zinc cent represents one of the four Philadelphia subtypes created by the 1982 composition transition, struck from copper-plated zinc planchets (2.5 grams) with the smaller, more closely spaced date numerals. No secondary cross-reference numbers have been assigned to this entry. Cuds are among the most visually dramatic error types, as the raised featureless mass where the die rim segment fractured away is typically visible to the unaided eye, making them accessible entry points for collectors new to die variety attribution.
