Nearing the thirtieth entry in the Large Date series, CU-1c-1982-29(LD) on the Zinc Large Date subtype at 2.5 grams records yet another unique fracture geometry in what has become one of the most densely populated die break catalogs for any single United States coin subtype. The density of documentation at this point — twenty-nine distinct die fractures cataloged on the Large Date alone — provides an unusually rich dataset for researchers interested in the statistical distribution of die failures across a production run. Questions that such data could address include whether fracture positions cluster around particular angular regions of the die face, whether certain radial depths are disproportionately represented, and whether the distribution differs meaningfully between the Large Date and Small Date subgroups. On the zinc planchet, this interior cud fills the die void with copper-plated zinc whose softer core deforms more readily under coining pressure than the harder bronze alloy, potentially filling the void more completely while producing a slightly different surface texture at the cud's boundary.
